Representatives of Bulgarian trade unions joined their European fellow activists in a massive rally against austerity measures in the EU Saturday in Budapest.

The 40,000-strong rally marched as Ministers of Finance from the 27 member states met in the Hungarian capital to discuss further measures to combat the crisis.

"Workers will not pay the price of this crisis," stated secretary general of the European Trade Union John Monks.

Protesters demanded a "social Europe" with equitable wages and strong employment.

Many participants were carrying masks representing German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, seen as key supporters of radical spending cuts.

Others carried nooses around their necks.
