Pro-business demonstrators, holding signs, managed to form a human fence and stop representatives of the European Commission who are checking construction violations in Bulgaria's National "Pirin Park."

The EC has been notified by Bulgarian environmentalists, outraged by plans to increase 8 times the area of ski tracks and four times the one of ski lifts, to build 2 new winter resorts above the towns of Razlog and Dobrinishte, and to double the size of the Bansko one – all in the heart of the Pirin Mountain,

Citizens of Razlog, Dobrinishte and Bansko, who are in favor of expanding the ski zone, organized a 300-strong rally Monday. They gathered in front of the Bansko resort entrance, holding signs saying: "Putting People First," "No to Eco-Terrorism," and others. The participants are against the constant checks and infringement procedures from EC, which are triggered by local environmentalists' complaints.

The demonstrators from the National Civil Coalition "Nature for People and Regions," favoring enlargement of winter resort business, were able to stop the EC officials' bus and force one of the representatives to come out and promise the checks would be objective.

The mayors of several local municipalities, and local officials were also on attendance to support the coalition. Its Chair, Philip Tsanov, says the Bulgarian environmentalist organizations are practicing eco-terrorism and use slander to discredit public and private business in mountain areas, pointing out they tarnish the image of the country and halt new projects and development of tourism, farming and construction.
