Both Bulgaria's right and left wing are unwavering in demanding the resignation of Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov, over alleged scams at the State Fund Agriculture.
The entire leadership of the Fund, which is the agency dealing with payments from the EU SAPARD program, was replaced earlier Thursday on a decision of its Governing Board.
The news was announced in person by Naydenov, who said Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, had approved the changes.
Martin Dimitrov, co-Chair of the right-wing Blue Coalition, however, pointed out the Minister cannot keep his post after such accusations, adding the Fund is being investigated and Naydenov must be, at least, temporarily removed until the probe is over.
Other grounds for the Minister's ousting are subsidies which Bulgarian farmers must return and the untamed outbreaks of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), according to Dimitrov, who praised Borisov for what he said was an unprecedentedly fast reaction on an alert coming from the right wing.
The left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) also stated the changes at the Fund are not sufficient and Naydenov must go. The BSP Member of the Parliament, Anton Kutev, also blamed the Minister for the FMD situation, saying he had been the "weakest person at this post" in the last 21 years. Kutev says after Naydenov, it would be the turn of the Prime Minister to be ousted.
