Bulgaria does not import any food products from Japan, according to the head of the country's Food Safety Agency, Yordan Voynov.

"At present, no foods or drinks are imported to Bulgaria from Japan," he said, adding that the country used to import fishery products, but stopped three years ago.

Voynov has explained that there is a restriction for export of foods and drinks from Japanese prefectures that are close to the Fukushima nuclear plant.

"Restrictive measures for affected enterprises for food products are imposed so that they do not distribute the following foods produced in the respective prefectures: spinach from the prefectures Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma, and milk from Fukushima," he said.

The head of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said that according to Japanese officials, in a radius of 20 km from the Fukushima nuclear plant, the radiation levels did not possess a threat to human life.

Voyno has confirmed Bulgaria's readiness to send food and mineral water to Japan. However, the Japanese officials have not yet requested help of this type from the country.

A number of countries imposed a ban on imports of food products from Japan, including vegetables and fruits, milk products, sea wheat and seafood, over fears of radiation contamination. The European Union has also tightened its control over food imports from the earthquake-hit country,
