Bulgaria's German coach Lothar Matthaeus has declared that the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifier with Switzerland will be like a "final for both teams."
Both Bulgaria and Switzerland are hoping to grab the three points in Sofia on Saturday in order to retain even a modest chance to make it at least to the second spot in qualifying Group G for Euro 2012.
Matthaeus urged the Bulgarian audience to lend all-out support to the national football team against Switzerland on Saturday.
"I have the feeling that every one of the players has understood the importance of this match. Every one of them is aware. We need the support of the fans," the German coach said Tuesday.
He did mention, however, that Bulgaria is more of an outsider for the first two spots in the group even though it still has chances to make it to Euro 2012.
As far as the Swiss team is concerned, Matthaeus said it has brilliant players.
The German coach refuted any reports that he might be negotiating with other teams. "I am fully focused on my work as a coach of the Bulgarian national team. I hope to be around for a long time. Of course, that depends on the team's achievements," he stated.
Bulgaria holds the fourth spot in Euro 2012 qualifying group G with 3 points. Montenegro is first with 10 points and four matches, all the other teams have three played three matches each. England is second with 7 points followed by Switzerland with 3 points but with a better goal difference than Bulgaria. Wales is on the last, fifth spot with 0 points.
