There is currently a second wave of illegal immigrants from Libya, according to the Bulgarian EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva.

In her words, the refugees go mostly to neighboring to Libya countries. She added that it was very concerning that not only foreign workers, but also Libyan families want to leave their homeland.

"We already see Libyan families who run away. So we are not talking only about foreigners who want to return to their homes, but we have real refugees. These are people who do not have homes to come back to," Georgieva said Thursday for the Bulgarian National Radio.

The EU Commissioner also pointed out that the Libyan refugees demand a different kind of help.

"We will work on deciding how can our help be directed towards the changing situation,"Georgieva said.

She also urged the international community to brace for the massive escape of Libyans by sea as well.

“We pray for the best possible outcome, but we have to be prepared for the worst, for a massive migration of refugees and victims of the attacks of forces supporting leader Muammar Gaddafi,” Georgieva said.

The EU Commissioner assured that the European Union is ready to increase its help for Libyan refugees.

“At the same time we urge the Egyptian authorities to help those who come from Libya and cross the border to look for shelter. We also urge them to improve the conditions for accepting these people,” Georgieva said.

Since February 20, about 280 000 people have escaped from Libya. About 151 000 of them went to Tunisia and 118 000 to Egypt, according to data from the United Nations High Commisisoner for Refugees (UNHCR).
