The youth branch of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) from the northern city of Pleven are rising in support for the fight of former Interior Minister, Rumen Petkov, against US Ambassador to Sofia, James Warlick.

In the past months, Petkov, now a BSP Member of the Parliament, and Warlick have engaged in a furious war of words that flared after the US envoy alleged the Socialist's visa was withdrawn on grounds of an investigation carried out against him, but refused to specify the details.

In an open letter, sent to the media Thursday, the young Socialists from Petkov's native city of Pleven are asking the Ambassador to state the motives and proof for his allegations and explain which country is conducting a probe against the former Interior Minister

The BSP supporters further demand an answer from Warlick about Petkov's claims the envoy had stated Bulgaria must legalize the so-called "soft drugs," saying young Bulgarians have the right to be informed on the matter.

The BSP MP told the media he was pleasantly surprised by the civil position of the young Socialists and that he had called them to thank them.

"These are questions the Ambassador must answer. I have firmly declared my position," Petkov said.
