Greece's and Bulgaria's plans to build border fences along their borders with Turkey has been met with suspicion by Turkish officials, according to the Turkish AA agency.

The two neighbors' intention to build fences along the Turkish border has a hidden agenda, Chairman of Turkish Center for International Relations and Strategic Analysis, Sinan Ogan, has stated.

"Greece, under the pretext of of illegal migration, and Bulgaria, under the pretext of taking measures against foot and mouth disease, are practically building a wall between Turkey and Europe," he has said.

Bulgaria could not build a fence along its border with Turkey as it would be extremely costly and fail to prevent animals from crossing the border, according to Mustafa Yardimci, a board member at Turkey's Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges and chairman of the Executive Board of Edirne Commodity Exchange.

"Bulgaria wants to build a 143-km long fence along the border with Turkey under the pretext of foot and mouth disease. It is asking EU to pay for the costs. It means the EU is building a 'Berlin Wall' along our borders. Let's say they managed to stop boars with a fence, what about birds and moles. EU is marking its borders," Yalciner has stated.

The planned rebuilding of the border fortifications between Bulgaria and Turkey, which existed between the two states during the cold war period, was announced on Tuesday by Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov in the village of Rezovo in Bulgaria's southeasternmost corner, where the Bulgarian authorities localized a second outbreak of FMD, in addition to the cases in the nearby village of Kosti in the Burgas District.

Two weeks ago, Greece also announced it considers building a border fence with Turkey in order to cope with the waves of illegal immigrants.
