Bulgaria's government should take decisive measures on the recent spying scandal, the US Ambassador to the Balkan country, James Warlick stated on Monday.

"A scandal like that could emerge in each and every country, including the US. The question is how you can deal with it. It is the government's turn to react now," His Excellency commented before the bTV private channel.

Warlick pointed out that he still has not discussed the issue with Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

"Borisov should now demonstrate his leadership skills and do the the right thing for all Bulgarian citizens," the American Ambassador stated.

The wiretapping scandal in Bulgaria started with a media leak of the Bulgaria's Customs Agency Head Vanyo Tanov's recorded phone conversations with Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, in which, Tanov states that Tsvetanov has wanted to appoint "his own people" at the Customs Agency. According to other transcripts, the ruling centrist GERB MPs Iskra Fidosova and Menda Stoyanova have also tried to lobby with Tanov to hire their candidates at key Customs positions.

New tapes were published last Friday by the Galeria weekly, a paper believed to be the mouthpiece of the former special agent of the State Agency for National Security, DANS, (currently under house arrest), has been investigated on organized crime charges since his detention in the much advertised "Operation Octopus" in February 2010.

The recordings, which authenticity is yet to be proven, allege that Prime Minister Borisov provided a cover-up for the owner of the "Ledenika" beer company, Mihail Mihov.

The tapes reveal that Borisov had called Tanov with an order to immediately pull the tax agents out of the factory and that the "Ledenika" boss personally complained to the PM.

On Tuesday, James Warlick stated that the first step should be determining whether the recordings are authentic or not.

"The Bulgarian opposition is tryng to use this scandal for political goals," the American Ambassador pointed out.
