Ivan Geshev: Boyko Borissov is Behind the Attempt on my Life
Former prosecutor general Ivan Geshev has pointed fingers at GERB leader Boyko Borissov, alleging his involvement in an assassination attempt against him
Bulgaria's prime minister has reiterated the leaked wiretaps, accusing him of meddling in the work of the customs, are rigged and has vowed to send them abroad for verification.
"I want to get foreign experts to check the authenticity of the tapes. They know how dangerous it could be to add or delete words in the sentence," Boyko Borisov said on Sunday.
"There is nothing we should be ashamed of, I can guarantee that," he added.
The wiretapping scandal shook Bulgaria this week and implicated the prime minister as well after Galeria weekly released recordings, alleging that Borisov provided a cover-up for the owner of the "Ledenika" beer company, Mihail Mihov.
According to Borisov the scandal has been triggered by the decision of the government to crack down on the illegal trade with fuel and sack 42 senior diplomats - including the country's ambassadors to Germany, the UK, China, and Russia - on the grounds they worked for the communist-era secret service.
"We are the first government, which had the courage to put its finger in the wound called State security. All the people affected by that were more than quick to react. Now I am impatient to get the results from the checks, so that I can make my conclusions," Borisov said.
A fourth tape of a phone conversation between senior Bulgarian officials was released late on Friday by the Galeria weekly.
This time the taped conversation is between Customs Agency head Vanyo Tanov and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov. It tackles with issue with the activities and license of the Ledenika brewery and its owner businessman Mihail Mihov, aka "Misho Birata" (i.e. Misho the Beer).
The new tape is the fourth one released on Friday Galeria weekly, a paper believed to be the mouthpiece of Aleksei Petrov, former special agent of the State National Security Agency DANS, (currently under house arrest), who has been investigated on organized crime charges since his detention in the much advertised "Operation Octopus" in February 2010.
The recordings, whose authenticity is yet to be proven, allege Borisov provided a cover-up for the owner of the "Ledenika" beer company, Mihail Mihov.
The tapes reveal that Borisov had called Tanov with an order to immediately pull the tax agents out of the factory and that the "Ledenika" boss personally complained to the PM.
In another tape, Tanov can be heart telling his Deputy, Antoniy Strandzhev, to keep the documents secure while he is away.
