Bulgaria Tightens Citizenship Criteria: Language Fluency Now a Must!
The Bulgarian Parliament has voted to amend citizenship laws, making proficiency in the Bulgarian language a prerequisite for obtaining citizenship
Bulgaria's former Diaspora Minister, Bozhidar Dimitrov, has stated that his functions will probably be taken over by the Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov.
"Most probably, Djankov will replace me. I have received the most support from him," Dimitrov said Wednesday in an interview for the Bulgarian channel TV+.
In December, he resigned from his post as Bulgaria's Minister without Portfolio after it was revealed that he was part of the 33 Bulgarian Ambassadors who have worked as collaborators and agent for the former Communist State Security.
The revelations caused a political turmoil in Bulgaria and the Prime Minister Boyko Borisov firmly pledged to fire the discredited diplomats.
In his interview, Dimitrov refused to comment on the scandal because this was an interference with the work of Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov, in his words.
However, he said that he believed that his work has given only positive results. He added that it was illogical for his duties to be transferred to the Foreign Ministry after his resignation.
The former minister claimed he did not know the reason why he was ousted.
"I do not know why I was ousted, but I will not ask. It is not because of my work because I have only received success and I was never criticized for it. The Prime Minister told me only "It is necessary" and this was it," Dimitrov said.
He noted that one of the reasons for his ousting might have been the publications in Western media against his generosity in granting Bulgarian citizenship.
According to reports, Western Europe was alarmed because those with Bulgarian citizenship will also receive the right to live and work in any EU member state.
Dimitrov was quoted saying that publications about hundreds of thousands or even millions flooding Europe in a new immigration wave are exaggerated, declaring a mere 16,000 have received Bulgarian passports in the last 10 years.
