The Bulgarian National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) has asked the Finance Ministry for permission to pay all its debts to pharmacies at once.

The sum amounts to about BGN 219 M and is one tenth of the 2011 state budget allocated for medicines. However, it would cover the debts of NHIF to the pharmacies for 2010.

The Finance Ministry and the Supervisory Board of the fund are expected to allow the payment next week.

About BGN 391 M are envisioned in the 2011 budget of NHIF for medicines for home treatment, medical devices and diet foods for special medical purposes.

Another BGN 100 M are envisioned for unpaid duties of the fund for 2010. They include expenses of pharmacies for two accounting periods of last year and payments to hospitals for June and July.

A total of BGN 17,156 M were paid to pharmacies and BGN 5,000 of them came from cut administrative expenses of NHIF.
