A senior agent of the Bulgarian State National Security Agency DANS has resigned after he was caught leaking classified information, according to reports.
Bozhidar Naldzhiev was caught leaking information to Aleksei Petrov, a former secret agent of DANS, nicknamed "the Tractor" and "the Octopus", who has been under investigation for organized crime activities since February 2010, reported Bulgarian news site Mediapool.
According to the unconfirmed report, Naldzhiev, who is the head of a sector in the anti-corruption directorate of DANS, resigned on his own, and it is unclear why he is not prosecuted for leaking classified information on the Aleksei Petrov case.
Before his appointment to DANS, Naldzhiev was the head of the police department in the southwestern Bulgarian town of Petrich.
He has been part of a task force collecting evidence against Aleksei Petrov since the formation of the team. Subsequently, however, other agents found that Naldzhiev was a "double agent", according to Mediapool.
The site points out that almost a year after the high-profile special police operation "Octopus", the Borisov government's expectations for busting a major mafia ring are falling apart, and of the 20 persons charged initially, only 3 have remained as suspects.
Aleksei Petrov himself has been released under house arrest since the fall of 2010.
