The leader of the Bulgarian right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, Ivan Kostov, has expressed suggestion that the President Georgi Parvanov is sabotaging the country’s entry in the Schengen Area.
In an interview for the Bulgarian private Nova TV on Thursday, Kostov said that Parvanov does not want the country to enter the Schengen zone because he is supporting other countries’ interests in Bulgaria.
He commented on the recent scandal about 33 Bulgarian Ambassadors, who were revealed to have worked as collaborators and agents for the former Communist State Security.
“If the president does not accept the demand of the government to remove from posts these Ambassadors, he will turn these diplomats into zombies – they will remain at their posts but will be unable to do anything since they will no longer represent the Bulgarian government,” Kostov said.
He noted that if this happens, it will be interpreted as an attempt to sabotage Bulgaria’s entry into the Schengen zone.
Kostov also advised the Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov to not reconcile that the only way for the country to join the Schengen Agreement is if it is attached to Romania.
He reiterated his party’s position that Bulgaria should try to detach from the neighboring country during negotiations.
“The government can do it. We did it, back in the days. We have a very strong Ambassador to France, Marin Raykov, and he should be used. Borisov should not get desperate,” said Kostov, who was former Bulgarian Prime Minister.
