The Members of the Bulgarian Parliament passed Thursday more amendments to the Election code, pertaining to election campaign financing of political parties.
Businesses will no longer be able to secretly finance political formations by offering free services or items. These now can be provided only by individuals who will have to sign a declaration the items are their personal property and do not belong to a company.
Business donations were banned before, but the law left the door open for free services and items, allowing parties to receive billboards, brochures, advertising materials, offices, cars, the use of conference halls and others.
The MPs from the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party were very active in the discussion, asking to eliminate the declaration clause from the text, the Bulgarian daily "Dnevnik" writes.
During the general elections in the summer of 2009, RZS was the party making headlines for such donations, especially billboards and offices, provided by certain businesses.
The Conservatives' objections were rejected by the Parliament.
MPs further limited cash donations, deciding that any amount over BGN 1 000 should be given through a bank transaction. Until now the cash amount was BGN 5 000. The maximum individual monetary donation remains BGN 10 000 a year. Anonymous, business, religious institutions, foreign company, cabinet and NGO donations continue to be banned.
A new change is the ban for parties to organize fundraising events.
