The list with Bulgarian Ambassadors and Consuls, who have been agents of the former Communist State Security, has been known by all recent Foreign Ministers.

This was stated by Solomon Passy, Bulgaria's ex-Foreign Minister (2001-2005) before a Bulgarian media on Wednesday.

"The current Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov must have the freedom to act much more and decide himself who should be appointed as Ambassador," Passy commented on the possible solution of the diplomatic issue.

"When a problem is tackled so late, it is difficult to be solved. A good decision could have been made 20 years ago, not now," he added.

Bulgaria's special panel, investigating the communist-era police files, known as the Files' Commission, announced Tuesday that nearly 190 Bulgarian Ambassadors and Consuls, or nearly 50% of all Bulgarian diplomats, have been collaborators and agents of the former Communist State Security.

The probe involved 462 diplomats. The law mandates checks of Ambassadors, Consuls, and Deputy Directors of diplomatic missions.

Bulgaria's communist-era security service is believed to have remained potent after the fall of communism with the ex-operatives closely linked to the political and business establishment.
