Bulgaria: DPS Nominates Elena Yoncheva for MEP
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Blagoevgrad has nominated Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for the European Parliament, sparking intense debate and speculation
The opposition Members of the Bulgarian Parliament submitted Monday a request for the establishment of a Parliamentary Investigative Committee to probe the appointment of notorious Kalina Ilieva as CEO the State Agriculture Fund.
54 MPs from the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party have signed the request, following the last-week announcement of the Socialists they would demand such probe involving the "Ilieva" case, and the activities of the Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov, as a Chair of the Fund's Managing Board.
According to the Parliamentary rules, a temporary investigative committee can be established under the request of the Speaker or of one fifth of the MPs – at least 48.
The opposition proposes for the committee to include 6 members – 1 from each Parliamentary group and 1 independent MP. They will have one month to probe Nyadenov and Ilieva –their activities while she was heading the Fund; how exactly she was selected and appointed to the post, her work experience, management skills, and education qualifications. The Committee will also investigate if there was pressure to assign Ilieva at the post.
The left-wing further distributed notes from the meeting of the Fund's Managing Board, dated August 18, 2009, when the appointment had been discussed. The notes show there were five frontrunners, and Ilieva was the one making the final cut. After that, Minister Naydenov left the meeting to coordinate the decision with Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, who sent a written agreement approving the assignment.
