The Bulgarian cabinet decided Wednesday to give an additional BGN 800 000 to arts academies (universities), to churches for repairs and to firefighters who just helped Israel tame their disastrous blaze.

The Musical, Visual Arts and Theater and Film Academies are receiving BGN 100 000 each. They were promised to them by Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, over a month ago and will be used to pay heating and electric power bills to avoid sending students on a forced winter break. The money is a sort of reimbursement for the academies for using their own funds to do repairs in 2010, according to the Council of Ministers.

"The State arts academies have certain specifics that make them different from other colleges and that must be fulfilled – they need special temperatures, lighting, floors, acoustics, special preservation conditions," the press release reads.

The money of BGN 300 000 will also be used for the purchase of theater wardrobe, props, instruments and consumables.

Borisov promised the funds in the beginning of November after students from the three academies staged a protest rally, and he had a meeting with the colleges' presidents.

The cabinet also approved Wednesday funding in the amount of BGN 383 000 for repairs of churches in the Black Sea city of Burgas, the capital Sofia, the towns of Tervel, Ahtopol, Sozopol, and several villages across the country.

In August, the Council of Ministers slated BGN 420 000 for repairs of the "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" church in the Black Sea town of Sozopol, after the what is believed to be the relics of St. John the Baptist were discovered and the decision was made to keep them permanently in the church.

The cabinet also voted to give the 92 firemen, who just returned from Israel, a onetime award of BGN 1 000 each.
