A total of 853 refugee applications have been received in Bulgaria from 47 different nationalities IN 2009, according to UN's refugee agency UNHCR.

This indicates a 9% increase year on year. 15% of the asylum seekers in Bulgtaria– or 125 people – have been stateless.

Most of the refugee applications have come from Iraq – 307 (36% of the total number), followed by Afghanistan (50), Iran (39) and Armenia (39).

A total of 39 people successfully got refugee status in Bulgaria in 2009, which is a 30% increase in comparison to 2008.

For the period 1993 until 31 March 2010, a total of 18 248 asylum applications have been registered in Bulgaria. 1 496 persons have been recognized as refugees, and humanitarian status (subsidiary protection) has been granted to 4 346.

The Bulgarian authorities continue to detain refugees for longer than they have the right to at the facility for temporary accommodation in Busmantsi, commented Tatyana Valchanova from the Sofia Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
