The demand of the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party for a referendum on convening a Great General Assembly to pass a new Constitution has been signed by over half million of Bulgarians.
The list with 597 152 signatures was submitted with the Parliament by RZS leader, Yane Yanev.
The campaign was launched on September 6 in 227 municipalities with 120 hubs in Sofia of which 20 have been permanent, Yanev explained, adding the list could be seen as a no-confidence vote against the cabinet because it is a request to dissolve the 41st General Assembly (the Parliament).
According to the RZS leader, the referendum would finally put an end of the transition period in Bulgaria. He pointed out the current Constitution was prepared under now-obsolete historical conditions without taking into account Bulgaria's EU membership thus it must be changed entirely.
The RZS leadership is expecting all kinds of hurdles before the referendum such as delays in checking the authenticity of the signatures, or declaring the referendum anti-Constitutional.
The Speaker of the Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, refused to comment for the media, only saying this is the wrong time to discuss such referendum.
