Bulgarian environmentalist groups have scheduled a rally Sunday in downtown Sofia against the amendments to the laws concerning forest protection.

The current legislation on preserving Bulgarian forests is in desperate need of corectrions, but some of the new amendments are quite controversial, a representative of the environmentalists clarified.

The protesters are opposing amendmends which will allow state-owned forests in mountain regions such as Vitosha, Rila and Pirin to become private.

"The forests will still count as forests, even though ski-runs and wind turbine generators will be built in them, which will save the investors huge amounts of money. This is wrong," the environmentalists said.

They stated also that they do not want the responsibility of preserving Bulgarian forests to be transfered from the state to seperate municipalities.
