Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has made it clear he is especially happy to welcome Russian PM Vladimir Putin in Sofia, and to see progress in the Bulgarian-Russian energy deal.
Parvanov received Putin Saturday night after the Russian PM and his state delegation held talks with Prime Minister Borisov and the Bulgarian government and signed a long-anticipated agreement on the South Stream gas transit pipeline.
"After an year of hesitation and wandering in search of new parameters, I am glad that there is an opportunity for reinvigorating the work on the major energy projects," Parvanov told Putin upon welcoming him at the Bulgarian Presidency.
"I am happy that this reboot of the relations whose foundations you and I laid many years ago have found consistence in the face of the current Bulgarian government. I remember well our meeting in Zagreb in June 2007 when we announced the idea for the South Stream gas transit pipeline, and I am glad that today documents for the creation of a joint company were signed," Parvanov stated during his meeting with Putin, according to the press office of the Presidency, while also mentioning that he was not aware of the details of the agreements signed Saturday between governments of Russia and Bulgaria.
Putin is reported to have told Parvanov that he and his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov had "very meaningful, fruitful talks."
He revealed that the conversations with Borisov included not just energy projects but also machine building, military industrial cooperation and transport connections between Bulgaria and Russia.
"We are satisfied with the development of our relations. It is true that the trade between Bulgaria and Russia declined last year but now it is recovering, and our task is to aid that process," Putin said.
Since 2003, Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and Putin, in his capacity as Russian President and then Prime Minister, have met a total of 10 times, counting Saturday's visit.
