The leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Sergey Stanishev, has assessed as “completely natural” their partnership with the political project of the President Georgi Parvanov.

Bulgaria’s President convened on Thursday a national summit on his future political project named Alternative for Bulgarian Revival, the Bulgarian acronym being ABV (the first three letters of the Bulgarian alphabet), which he claimed was not a party, but only an initiative.

In Parvanov’s words, the project includes left, right and centrist ideas and includes representatives of many sectors – mayors, doctors, teachers, NGOs, educators, politicians, without their participation meaning a commitment from their own respective political parties.

Stanishev said Friday that it was natural for BSP and the ABV political project to cooperate not only for elections, but also for forming policies.

“There is one thing that is very common between the President’s and BSP’s positions and this is [our opinion] that the current government is helpless and is leading the country into a cul-de-sac,” the BSP leader said.

He has also explained that they will look for partners in various fields – political, non-governmental and citizens, who, in Stanishev’s words, do not approve of the country’s direction of development.

“What was not made clear was the goal of the project. Because when policies are formed, the question is how they would be implemented,” he said.

In his words, if the ABV project develops as a party, then the participants would have to make their own choice.

“All the members of BSP are free to participate in non-governmental initiatives but they always have to make their clear political choice,” Stanishev said.

He has also expressed his disagreement with the statement that there is no left or right way out of the recession. On the contrary, in his opinion, these are two different options and alternatives.

Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has shrugged off the news about the new party as no threat whatsoever, and a sign the opposition is getting more and more divided, bud pointed out Bulgaria no longer has a real president.

The second term of the President Georgi Parvanov expires next year and he does not have the right to run for a third term.

Observers have commented that Bulgaria's president is obviously laying the foundations of a new political movement, which will counterbalance the conservative government and will allow him to continue to wield his influence even after he leaves the office of the highest state post next year.

Parvanov is one of the most loved politicians in the country, but he is also very controversial, as he has worked for the secret services during the communist regime and is believed to have contacts with people linked to the underworld.
