The friendship between Syria and Bulgaria has persisted over some difficult years and will continue to flourish, stated Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is on an official trip to Sofia Tuesday.
After meeting Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov, President Assad expressed satisfaction at the bilateral talks, saying that they opened a number of perspectives for cooperative work between the two countries.
Among the topics discussed were the opportunities for substantially increasing trade between the two countries, as well as for coordinated infrastructure efforts.
"We also discussed the opportunities to take advantage of the strategic geographical location of Bulgaria in the Black Sea region and of Syria in the Mediterranean, which will form the basis of our future relations," said Bashar al-Assad.
He also added that the two countries need to consider that they share a common neighbor - Turkey, which might give them infrastructure opportunities such as joining their energy networks via interconnections with the Turkish one.
Both Presidents stressed the fact that their two countries are having talks with countries from the region of the Caspian for the transmission of oil and gas and thus have common interests in that area.
Bulgarian President Parvanov also offered that Bulgaria export electricity to Syria once its second NPP, the Belene NPP, is built.
