Bulgaria: Bulgaria PM No Longer Riding Popularity Wave, Govt Rating Stable Right after the elections last year Boyko Borisov enjoyed unprecedentedly high approval rates among Bulgarians, exceeding those of former king Simeon Saxe-Coburg from the times of his much expected and jubilant return in 2001. Just over a year after taking office as Bulgaria's prime minister, Boyko Borisov has seen his approval ratings dip sharply from 45% at the beginning of his term to 23% in October, according to a new poll.

Even though public confidence in the government has dropped since taking office, the survey, conducted by Gallup International, showed that the ruling center-right party GERB will win the majority of votes – 35.2% - should elections be held today.

Should elections be held now, the Bulgarian Socialist Party would garner 13.8% of the votes, while the votes for the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms will account for 6.8% of the electorate.

According to the survey the right-wing parties and the nationalists will not pass the threshold of 4%, and gain seats in parliament - the Blue Coalition and Ataka will gain no3% and 2.9% of the votes respectively.

The majority of respondents in the survey said they approve the government's foreign policy and its combat on corruption and crime, but are very critical of the health care, education and agriculture sectors.

While demonstrating determination to crush crime and corruption, Borisov has been sending mixed signals on a list of tough economic and political issues, including taxes, the retirement age, health contributions and whether to scrap or build energy projects with Russia.
