The Czech-owned electric power utility CEZ, servicing western Bulgaria, has announced a registered 18% increase of the network load in the beginning of October, compared to last year.

According to data from the utility for the first 10 days of October, the average network load was 1192 MW, while for the same period last year, it was 1012 MW.

"The increased network load for the period is normal. It is a result of the low temperatures for the season and the fact that the heating utility in Sofia has not yet turned the heat on for all customers," said Rosen Yordanov, Director of Operation and maintenance of the network in CEZ.

He has explained that it was natural that people, who usually count on the heating, would look for other ways for heating with electricity.

Statistics from the company shows that the increased consumption in western Bulgaria was usually registered in days with bad weather, before the beginning or after the end of the heating season.

The data also showed that the network load in October 2009, which was warmer than this year's month, was similar to the load in the summer months.

Since the beginning of the year, CEZ has invested BGN 21,8 M from its approved annual investment program in rehabilitation and update of the electricity distribution network and is planning to make the investments a total of BGN 27,6 M.
