The Bulgarian Socialist Party has formulated the goals of winning the post of President of Bulgaria and of keeping its good positioning in municipal authorities at upcoming 2011 elections.

"2011 elections must be turned in a successful pledge for a new governmental alternative," state the conclusions from the 47th national congress of the party held Saturday in Sofia.

The socialists vowed to fight "the monopolization of power on the part of GERB and the authoritarian tendencies in its rule."

BSP will put out a full fledged electoral strategy by March 2011.

At the forum, socialist leader Sergey Stanishev voiced some remarks regarding a much-debated future "political project" of current President Georgi Parvanov, saying in effect that the socialists will not allow the political left in Bulgaria to be split into two.

He thus confirmed expectations that Parvanov's new party could well be a competitor to the Socialist Party in the left.

Socialist vice-speaker of Parliament Georgi Pirinski slammed the economic and fiscal policy of the GERB cabinet, saying that parliamentarians must fight for a stimulus program for Bulgarian businesses to be included in the state budget for 2011.

He called for the protection of workers' interests and for the support of the middle class in Bulgaria, which according to him has been neglected.

At the forum, there were few critical statements addressed to the party leadership, after months of debate whether it should be changed after the losing of 2009 general elections.

One such statement came from the MP and representative of the so-called "left wing" of BSP Yanaki Stoilov, who said that the socialists must review their leadership by early 2011.

It nevertheless appears that such a move is not forthcoming.

In his concluding speech, socialist leader Stanishev expressed satisfaction that BSP behaved "like a family" at the congress and expressed confidence in its future.

"We are not fighting to get more seats in town councils - we are fighting for Bulgaria's future," stated Stanishev.

Apart from setting itself some very demanding goals for both 2011 elections, the Bulgarian socialists also explicitly stated that they are seeing center-right GERB party as their main rival and that there are no possibilities of future coalitions between the two.
