Bulgaria: DPS Nominates Elena Yoncheva for MEP
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Blagoevgrad has nominated Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for the European Parliament, sparking intense debate and speculation
Bulgaria's National Audit Office has announced that no violations have been found in the property record of Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who was accused by the RZS party of questionable acquisitions in the past years.
The conservative RZS party of Yane Yanev said Tsvetanov got 6 apartments as "presents" from the ethnic Turkish party DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) with which he had secret deals.
According to the Audit Office, in 2007 and 2008, Tsvetanov did not need to declare his properties because he was not a civil servant (he quit the office of Deputy Mayor of Sofia in 2006 to chair the GERB party of Boyko Borisov). The GERB party at the time did not receive a state subsidy and under the respective legislation, its chair was not obliged to declare his properties and wealth.
In 2009, Tsvetanov submitted a conflict of interests declaration in his capacity as Interior Minister, and the Audit Office found no violations in it. He also submitted a declaration for 2010, which is still under inspection, and the results will become clear at the end of November.
