Bulgaria's Interior Ministry has not been more successful in the past 20 years, the interior minister said during parliamentary discussions on the changes in the Interior Ministry Act.
The changes were adopted on first reading on Wednesday. Bulgaria's Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov explained that 62,000 people were working in the ministry in 1996 and in 2001. In 2005, the number of employees increased to 66,000 and in 2010 it dropped down to 58,000.
"Reforms have to be made in stages, They should not be perceived as an experiment," Tsvetanov said.
He added that when he came into office, he found that part of the staff have not been redeployed, which, in the minister's words, caused insecurity in the employees.
"The security system is the spine of the Bulgarian democratic society. Today, the state is much stronger despite people who are still dependent on criminal structures," Tsvetanov said.
The minister has stated that the Bulgarian government has absorbed all of the money and has provided BGN 56 M for fulfilling the requirements for Bulgaria's entry in the Schengen zone.
"We have to make all legal amendments, connected to the country's entry in the Schengen zone, by the end of the year," he said.
