Simeon Djankov: Next 3-4 Months Will Be Hard for Bulgaria
"Three or four difficult months are in store for the Bulgarian economy.
Bulgaria's Financial Minister, Simeon Djankov, has announced there will be no turn in economic policy.
"There will be no turn in the economic policy in the country. But new ideas are emerging, there is a dialogue," Djankov said Monday on the Bulgarian National Television.
He has explained that the fastest way to get out of the crisis would be if country is governed is center-right.
"The gray economy is always increasing when taxes are increased. However, we are not talking about increasing of taxes, but rather for aligning," he said.
The finance minister quoted a survey by KPMG, according to which Bulgaria is one of the 10 countries with the lowest tax burden. He also noted that Bulgaria was the only EU member state, which did not raise taxes because of the global crisis.
Djankov also commented on the increase from 2% to 8% of the health insurance contributions. In his words, this measure was taken in order to stabilize the health system for years ahead, not only for several months.
He reminded that in 2007 it was decided that the health insurance contributions should go up by 2%, with th 7th and 8th percent being collected by private health funds in the Bulgarian National Bank.
The minister claimed that the health care system in Bulgaria has never worked properly and this has most often been the reason through the years for submitting a no-confidence vote against cabinets.
"I do not want to increase the health insurance contributions," he said and added the measure has been taken temporarily because money from other sectors were not enough.
He stated that people in Bulgaria spend about 50% less for health care than the average for the EU.
"In other words, the money for health care has to go up," Djankov said.
