Bulgaria: Bulgaria's PM: I Restored Justice in Health Insurance Boyko Borisov, Bulgaria's PM, has announced that he "restored the justice" and from January 1, 2011 the health insurance contributions that Bulgarians pay would be spent only for this purpose. Photo by BGNES

The 8% health insurance contributions that Bulgarians pay for health care will be spent only for this purpose, Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov announced Friday.

"The whole sector wanted to "restore the justice" and the money for health insurance to be spent on health insurance only," Borisov said Friday in an interview for the Bulgarian private TV channel bTV.

His statement was in reference to the agreement that he signed with Bulgarian physicians on Wednesday, which guarantees that from January 1, 2011 health insurance contributions will be used only for health care and not to fill other budget gaps.

He has also pointed out that the state fiscal reserve is BGN 6,7 B.

"It is important to note that this is how much the Bulgarian economy makes. This is how much we spend on education, culture, defense and everything else. It is not by accident that Brussels imposed sanctions on all the countries that are trying to spend more than they make. We are trying very hard to restructure the economy so that the state can make more money," Borisov said.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister has also claim that he expressed the country's support for the European perspective for Turkey, not for its EU membership.

"I want a European, not an Asian Turkey as a neighbour. The decision for an EU membership is taken by 27 countries. Croatia is absolutely ready but it is still not accepted. When Turkey is about the enter the EU, then we will make a referendum. But this topic is not on the agenda. No one in Brussels is discussing whether Turkey should be accepted in the EU," Borisov said.

During the visit of Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Sofia on Monday, Bulgaria's Prime Minister spoke in favor of Ankara's EU candidacy and showed his irritation over the criticism by France's ambassador in Bulgaria, Etienne de Poncins, who claims Sofia has no clear position on Turkey's EU prospects.
