Bulgaria Faces Stumbling Blocks as Acting Prime Minister Candidates Decline Radev's Offer
As President Rumen Radev continues his quest to appoint an acting prime minister, Bulgaria encounters obstacles as potential candidates refuse the offer
I want people in Bulgaria to say that Ombudsman is a person who helps them, the newly elected Bulgarian ombudsman, Konstantin Penchev, has stated.
"My ultimate goal is, when in five years Bulgarians are asked what Ombudsman is, to say that this is a person who helps them," Penchev said Friday in an interview for the Bulgarian Nova TV.
He pointed out that it was a practice in the European countries to elect Chairs of supreme courts as Ombudsmans and vice versa.
Penchev explained that the two positions have many things in common because people's main problems were connected to the administration law.
"The knowledge I have as a judge from the Supreme Administrative Court (VAS) would obviously be useful to me as the Ombudsman. You will see that it made sense that I hold this position," he said, adding his new position was an honor and a challenge to him.
Penchev was officially named as Bulgaria's new Ombudsman on Thursday. He was the candidate of the ruling party GERB and replaced Ginyo Ganev, whose term expired in April.
He would not be able to immediately assume the new post because the procedure to release him from duties as VAS Chair is lengthy and complex.
