Bulgaria's DPS Open to New Governance Strategies as Coalition Talks Progress
Amidst ongoing negotiations to form a new government, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) has expressed openness to exploring alternative governance arrangements
The Bulgarian Committee in charge of seizing illegally acquired assets in favor of the state has levied a distrain on property worth BGN 2,284,230 of the MP from the ethnic Turkish party DPS, Gyunay Sefer.
The announcement was made Thursday by the Chair of the Committee, Stoyan Kushlev, who signed an agreement for exchange of information with the Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
The measures have been imposed on Sefer because he and another MP from DPS, Mithat Tabakov, were tried for embezzlement of money from public procurements.
The two were elected on the ticket of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in the Bulgarian town of Silistra.
The indictment states that Sefer and Tabakov have embezzled money from two public procurements for construction of a road between the village of Okorsh and the central road connecting the city of Shumen and the town of Silistra.
Their companies have won a tender for the construction of a 7,3 km road, while in the end only 1,7 km have been finished.
Sefer and Tabakov have been investigated for the construction of a sewage network worth BGN 29 M in the town of Dulovo, near Silistra.
In Kushlev's words, Sefer owns two apartments at "attractive" locations in Sofia, 23 properties, 23 cars, 6 tobacco warehouses, etc.
The chair of the committee has also explained that the MP from DPS could not prove the origin of his property, which is worth 17,000 minimal salaries.
Sefer has also been involved in the trial against the former Director of the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA), Maria Murgina, who is charged on four accounts – two for criminal breach of trust, one for putting employees under duress and one for a false property declaration.
The main witness in the case, Milena Tsolchovska, who was the territorial head of NRA for Silistra, has stated that Sefer had threatened to dismiss her because of performed audits on his companies.
