Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
The two major opposition formations in Bulgaria - the Socialist Party (BSP) and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) finally found common ground on the cabinet's no-confidence vote.
The statement was made Tuesday by the BSP leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, who said after month-long debates the opposition has agreed to base the vote on the cabinet's failure in the health care sector and will submit it by the end of the week, most likely on Friday.
In order to file such vote, 48 signatures of Members of the Parliament are needed – the left-wing has 40 MPs and DPS has 37.
"The common opinion was that a no-confidence vote must focus on the biggest problem and failure and we joined around the idea this is the situation in the health care sector," Stanishev said, reiterating several times this is a vote not only against the Health Minister, but the entire cabinet and mostly against Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, over their responsibility for the full collapse of the system.
The former PM defined the idea of hospital copay as brazenness and the health policy of the government as a threat to the life and wellbeing of Bulgarians, appealing to all who agree with the opposition to join the vote's signature list.
Stanishev further said he was intrigued how the right-wing will support the cabinet in the upcoming no-confidence move when they already asked for the Health Minister's resignation, all while pointing out she was not the problem, Borisov was.
The right-wing Blue Coalition between the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) declined several times to join the opposition in the vote on the grounds the latter is no alternative to the rule of the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party.
Stanishev qualified the right-wing's attitude as evasion from problems and "hypocrisy," adding there are many more reasons for a no-confidence vote – the budget and fiscal policies, the impoverishment of the nation, the failure of the anti-crisis measures, the crisis in the culture and the eduction sector.
The Parliamentary Code requires holding of the vote no later than 7 days after the submission of the proposal. 121 votes are needed in order to dismiss the cabinet.
