Bulgaria: Borisov Greets Bulgarians, Pledges Global Solidarity at UN

In a moving speech at the UN General Assembly, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has congratulated the nation for Bulgaria's Independence Day while pledging respective support for global development initiatives.

"From this grand tribune I would like to congratulate the Bulgarian nation which celebrates today its Independence Day. For 102 years this holiday has shown how with efforts and will the nation of an underdeveloped state can preserve its dignity and start to develop successfully. I congratulate all Bulgarian citizens around the world with this holiday. What is more, I congratulate them because, despite all of their challenges, they have never refused to help those who are weaker and in greater need than them," declared Borisov in his first ever speech at the UN General Assembly.

Since September 18, the Bulgarian Prime Minister has been on a week-long visit to New York City for the 65th regular session of the UN General Assembly and the UN summit on the Millenium Development Goals.

Borisov pointed out that there was no way world leaders could escape from the fact that millions of people from developing nations live with less than 10 liters of water per day, while in the developed countries there are kitchen appliances that consume dozens of times more water.

“This is a reversed world which needs to be changed. From this high tribune, I would like to declare solemnly that Bulgaria realizes this the need for global development. We are going to help for the accomplishment of the Millenium Development Goals to the best of our abilities. Because we clearly understand the meaning of solidarity as a basic principle of politics,” stated the Prime Minister.

He pointed out that his government is determined to keep up with Bulgaria's commitments as a member of the UN and the EU with respect to providing global development aid.

“We ourselves in Bulgaria are facing many problems including with our standard of living and development. In spite of that, we are gradually living up to our commitments because we realize the significance of international solidarity. Today, we are relying a great deal on European solidarity and on the EU funds that it provides us with for the development of the Bulgarian economy. We are ready to show solidarity with respect to those nations around the world that need it,” Borisov explained.

In his words, in addition to improving the standard of living in Bulgaria, the efforts to develop the Bulgarian economy also make a lot of sense with respect to the opportunities to generate more funds which can be allocated for global development aid.

The PM told the UN General Assembly that development aid provided by Bulgaria at present is focused geographically on the Balkans and the Black Sea region but through the Bulgarian contribution to the 10th European Development Fund, it will support indirectly nations from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific region.

Borisov is convinced that, in addition to financial resources, expertise, know-how, and specialists are also crucial means for development aid that countries with more limited financial opportunities such as Bulgaria can provide. He called upon the global community for better coordinated international development aid mechanisms.

“I state my conviction that the improvement of the quality of the allocated aid is no less important than its volume for the accomplishment of the Millenium Development goals. That is why our development aid policy is in accordance with the principles of the Paris Declaration and the Acra Action Plan,” Borisov said.

After the General Assembly meeting on Wednesday, the Bulgarian PM is scheduled to meet in New York City with the state leaders of other Balkan states.

On Thursday, he will attend the special reception hosted by US President Barack Obama for the UN Millenium Development Goals summit.
