Bulgaria's Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism, Traicho Traikov, is taking part in the 21st World Energy Congress in Montreal, Canada.

Traikov has left for the Congress, which is taking place September 12-14, announced the Economy Ministry. The topics of the forum will focus on energy security and environmental protection.

During the Congress, the Bulgarian Minister will make an address entitled "Geopolitics, Energy Markets, and Trade."

He will talk about the condition of the European energy markets, arguing that they are not functioning efficiently to a sufficient degree. As a result, European consumers are still unable to take advantage of the benefits of the free market such as low prices and choosing a provider, the Ministry says.

Duing his visit in Canada, Traikov will meet with the heads of the Canadian agency for encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship, and the development of a knowledge based economy and with the president of the Canadian council of CEOs (uniting 150 Canadian corporations with assets worth more that CAD 3.5 T annual turnover of CAD 800 B), John Manly.

The minister is also set to have meetings with senior managers of engineering, utility and energy companies in Canada.

Bulgaria's trade with Canada in 2009 amounted to USD 108 M in 2009; Bulgaria's export was USD 44.5 M vs. the import worth USD 63.5.

Bulgaria exports to Canada clothes, metals, forage, among others, and imports ores, engines, cars, frozen fish.

Canadian investments in Bulgaria amounted to EUR 52.6 M in 1996-2008 giving Canada the 30th spot in the ranking.

In 2009, Bulgaria was visited by 12 671 Canadian citizen, while 2 676 Bulgarians traveled to Canada.
