A 2.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Bulgarian capital Sofia shortly after 13 pm on Friday, rattling homes and the nerves of many who were unsure of what they had just experienced.

Though it ranked low on the Richter scale and was of short duration, the tremor was felt strongly in the central districts of the capital, sending some people out on the streets.

The epicenter has been located south-east of the capital, but close to it, the Geophysics Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, said.

No major damage or injuries were reported.

There were no immediate reports of interruptions in landline phones, services of mobile operators, electricity and water supply.
