Bulgaria’s new Deputy Foreign Minister will be the current Ambassador to Israel, Dimitar Tsanchev, according to the Bulgarian daily “Trud” (Labor), citing own sources.

Before going to Israel, Tsanchev was the Foreign Ministry spokesperson during the term of the previous coalition cabinet and of Minister, Ivaylo Kalfin, from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

The diplomat is to leave his Tel Aviv job ahead of time because he was chosen to become Deputy Minister personally by Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, during the latter’s trip to Israel in January, “Trud” writes.

Tsanchev speaks fluently French, Arabic and Hebrew and has a long diplomatic career, including with NATO and the UN. He was also a foreign policy advisor to former President, Petar Stoyanov.

The Tel Aviv post will be taken by Yuriy Shterk, Political Director at the Foreign Ministry, also a career diplomat with long-term experience.

It remains unclear what exactly Tsanchev will be in charge of and if the Foreign Ministry will have two or three deputy ministers.
