The warm weather that swept Bulgaria for the most part of August will reach one of its peaks at the beginning of this week, but forecasts say cooler air is about to set in.

Temperatures are forecast to vary between 38C and 39C across the country on Monday. The heat will come off the boil on Tuesday, when spells of cold air will cool down the country from the sweltering weather and push the mercury slightly down.

Wednesday will bring scattered rain showers in western and central Bulgaria, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Holiday-makers along the Black Sea coast will enjoy the shining sun with the temperature of the water hovering around the record-high 30C.

Doctors have advised people, particularly the children and the elderly, who are the most vulnerable, to take every precaution necessary and avoid staying out during the day.

Medics urge people with heart problems to stay home during the hottest hours of the day. Drivers should be on their highest alert and take regularly short breaks with refreshments.

Over the weekend, more than 200 people were rushed to hospitals because of heat strokes.

The highest summer temperature was recorded in Bulgaria in 1916 – 45,2C.
