Bulgaria’s Ambassador to the US, Elena Poptodorova, handed Thursday copies of her letters of accreditation to the American Deputy Secretary of State, James Steinberg, the Bulgarian Embassy in DC reported.
During the meeting Poptodorova made comments on the need of more visible and direct US commitment to energy projects based on diverse sources. The two have agreed on a plan to deepen the dialogue on securing a sound and stable energy future for Bulgaria.
Poptodorova and Steinberg have also discussed the situation in the Western Balkans and Bulgaria’s role in the integration of Southeastern Europe in NATO and the EU, with Steinberg praising the country’s constructive policies in the region.
The Bulgarian Ambassador and the US Secretary of State voiced hope issues in the Balkans, including the argument between Greece and Macedonia about the latter’s name, would be settled soon. They also joined around the opinion that Kosovo's declaration of independence in 2008 was not in violation of international law, according to the July rule of the International Court in The Hague. Regarding Serbia, the need to increase dialogue and collaboration with Belgrade in order to accelerate the country’s EU accession was the subject of discussion.
Poptodorova and Steinberg further talked on the measures Bulgaria is undertaking to reform its judicial system and to counter corruption and organized crime with the US diplomat again offering praise and high marks.
The US missile defense shield plans in Europe were discussed only in the context of the upcoming November NATO summit in Lisbon with the Bulgaria Ambassador saying she is hopeful the forum will reach consensus regarding these plans.
