The leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Sergey Stanishev, has announced that Bulgarian is gaining more than BGN 20 B from its energy contracts with Russia.

The former PM has also stated that he has been very careful during the negotiations with Russia and has provided one of the letters from the correspondence between the former Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov and the leadership of the Russian company “Gazprom”.

“We had to either take the risk of having 100% market prices from January 1, 2007 or to try and negotiate gradually increasing of prices until 2012, as we did,” Stanishev said.

Obcharov has stated that it is clearly stated in the letter that according to the contract signed in 1998, billing of natural gas will be implemented on the principle of initial securing of obligations under trade agreements with cash payment of transit.

“The letter shows that Russia has stated it is starting a comprehensive review of the prices on all existing contracts for delivering Russian natural gas to Bulgaria. It is also stated that the European Commission will be approach if there is a breach of contract on Bulgarian side of the European Energy Charter,” Ovcharov said.

He added that according to the letter, Russia will use all legal methods to protect the economic right of the company and its international partners.
