Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, announced Wednesday the report of the country’s energy watchdog about the three foreign-owned electric power utilities will be sent to the Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev.
Borisov stated the report of the auditors of the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (DKEVR) showed violations that have been carried out with the silent agreement of the State and the Prosecutor’s Office must probe the individuals who were Board members of the Czech-owned CEZ, the Austrian EVN and the German E.ON.
“We want to finally instate some sense of order in our country,” the PM declared.
In the presence of the media, Borisov signed Wednesday a resolution to send the report to the Prosecutor.
The Head of DKEVR, Angel Semerdzhiev, pointed out outsourcing by the power utilities went up anywhere between 200% and 400% since they came to Bulgaria in 2005. The violations could lead to the imposing of hefty fines on the power utilities, reaching as much as BGN 1 M, Semerdzhiev further explained.
The audit was ordered in April by the Bulgarian PM in order to find out whether power distribution utilities abide by the terms of their licenses and whether they are artificially hiking the price of electricity they are selling. Preliminary results, revealing violations of market laws, were made public in June, only to be denied by the companies, which say they have not been sent an official copy of the report. Borisov stressed Wednesday, he had ordered the audit to be mailed to the utilities.
