The US ambassador in Bulgaria James Warlick dismissed claims Tuesday that he is interfering with Bulgaria's national policies.
Last Wednesday Warlick requested an emergency meeting with Bulgarian economy and energy minister Traicho Traikov just a day after important steps were made in joint high-profile energy projects between Russia and Bulgaria during the visit of a Russian delegation headed by first deputy PM Viktor Zubkov.
The diplomat wanted to know just what the agreements reached with the Russian side were and voiced acrimonious comments about Bulgaria's energy contracts being kept secret.
“The Bulgarians probably would like to know why their natural gas price went up 30%, and whether it won’t increase more in the next 5-10 years. However, there is no way of knowing that because Bulgaria’s energy contracts with Russia are secret,” Warlick said before meeting Traikov.
US ambassadors to Sofia have a history of commenting sensitive internal matters in Bulgaria. Warlick's statements had stirred some uproar among Bulgarian political leaders and media.
Tuesday the US diplomat clairfied that his goal had been to stress two things: diversification of energy deliveries and transparency in energy matters.
“Decisions about Bulgaria's future are taken by the Bulgarian government and the Bulgarian people. Those decisions taken today will affect the future of Bulgaria and the whole region for years on”, added he.
