Traicho Traikov, Bulgaria's economy and energy minister, called Monday for elimination of notorious intermediaries in the purchase of natural gas from Russia.

“Our position is that the contracts for gas delivery should be made directly between [Bulgarian state company] Bulgargaz and [Russian] Gazpromexport – for each single contract facing exipry,” said Traikov.

This statement comes in the wake of a high-ranking meeting Tuesday between Russian first deputy-PM Viktor Zubkov and Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov in Sofia.

It also comes ahead of an official visit of a Bulgarian delegation to Moscow this Thursday to negotiate gas delivery deals and details on joint energy projects.

Monday Zubkov expressed astonishment at high gas prices in Bulgaria and vowed to ensure lower sale prices of Russian gas in the nearest future.

It also became clear that Bulgaria does not view Russian energy projects as unfavorably as was previously apparent, with Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov expressing commitment to the South Stream gas pipeline, among other joint projects.

Bulgaria's contracts for gas delivery with Russia expire 2011-2012. Shedding intermediaries was a long-time ambition of Bulgaria, but April it was announced that negotiations with Gazprom have marked little progress.
