Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov is on a two-day visit to Azerbaijan Wednesday and Thursday, by invitation from his counterpart Ilham Aliyev.
Besides the mandatory overview of bilateral political and trade relations, the meeting between the two presidents will lay a strong emphasis on energy, addressing possible common projects in that field.
The visit is a follow-up to Parvanov's visit to Turkey and meeting with President Abdullah Gül. Then President Parvanov suggested to organize a three-way meeting between the gas companies of Bulgaria, Turkey, and Azerbaijan to negotiate details about the supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria.
The gas route from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria is key for the whole European Union in the much-vaunted "diversification" of natural gas consumption.
Parvanov's visit can also be seen in the context of recent speculation about the role of Bulgaria in the future South Stream gas pipeline project.
The two presidents will also discuss progress on a project between Bulgaria's Bultransgaz and Azerbaijan's SOCAR for compressed natural gas delivery from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria.
