Bulgaria and Greece have signed a new treaty for cross-border police cooperation.
The Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and the Greek Minister for the Protection of the Citizens, Michalis Chrysohoidis, signed an agreement which aims at strengthening the relations between the two countries, preventing potential threats to the public safety, and opposing cross-border organized crime.
The meeting emphasized smuggling, human trafficking, and drugs. “Our common goal is to achieve better results when fighting organized crime,” Tsvetanov said.
According to the Bulgarian Deputy PM, the treaty is an important step not only for the relations with Greece, but also for Bulgaria's preparation to join the Schengen Agreement.
“The implementation of the standards stipulated in the Schengen Treaty and the special forms of police cooperation will set a new phase in our joint actions,” Tsvetanov said.
Bulgaria hopes to be granted admission to the Schengen Agreement at the beginning of 2011.
