Bulgaria’s Education Minister, Sergey Ignatov, admits the country’s education system and its quality are facing very serious problems and deficiencies.

Ignatov spoke Saturday in an interview for Darik radio.

The Minister commented on the results from the State-administered high school exit exam, which showed Bulgarian seniors lack basic knowledge in a number of subjects. 75% of those who sat for the Geography exam received failing grades with Ignatov reiterating his experts’ opinion that students came unprepared over the common belief this is an easy subject.

Since his appointment, the Minister, backed by the cabinet of the Citizens for European Developments of Bulgaria (GERB) party, has vowed to carry out a significant reform in the country’s education system.

He told Darik the plan provides for actively including media as a partner of the Ministry to air and print educational programs in different subjects.

Another idea, announced by Ignatov, is to introduce more role playing and games in the curriculum for all grade levels, adding the matriculation exams would make sense only if their results are analyzed and used to improve education’s quality.

The Minister further informed the police is now ending their investigation in the recent scandal surrounding the high school Bulgarian Language and Literature exam, and know how its content leaked the night before and who has done it. According to Ignatov, more than one person is involved.
