Siemens Energy has received an order from Bulgaria for erection of a combined cycle district heating power plant, the company announced.

The customer is EVN (Energie Versorgung Niederösterreich), an energy and environmental services company headquartered in Maria Enzersdorf, Lower Austria. The power plant, to be built in the city of Plovdiv, is scheduled to start supplying approximately 50 megawatts of electricity and as much as 55 megawatts of district heat in late 2011.

For the power plant Siemens will supply an SGT-700 gas turbine, an SST-300 steam turbine, a heat-recovery steam generator with supplementary firing, and other auxiliary systems. With the plant operating in combined cycle duty the turbines will cogenerate both power and district heat. For the increased scope of supply, Siemens is also responsible for design of the plant, commissioning and civil works. The order also includes a long-term service agreement.

“Depending on the time of year between 21 and 55 MW of district heat can be extracted from the steam turbine,” said Markus Tacke, CEO of the Industrial Power Business Unit of Siemens Energy. “In the future our power plant will supply power and heat to Plovdiv. At the same time the up to 90 percent total efficiency attained by the cogeneration plant will also make a significant contribution toward operating economy and environmental protection.”

Cogeneration plants are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR 23 B, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
