The Israeli Embassy in Sofia distributed Monday a press release in connection with statements made by the leader of Bulgaria's far-right, nationalist Ataka party, Volen Siderov, in an TV interview.

The Embassy points out the tone, the vocabulary used by Siderov, his attitude and the topics he is interested in did not come as surprise because he has always been and is a consistent racist, anti-Semite, and an anti-Israeli politician.

In the interview for the Sunday “Face to Face” political talk show of the TV channel Nova Televizia, Siderov stated that alleged ringleader, Aleksei Petrov, who was arrested in February, had been providing diplomats in Sofia, namely people from the Israeli Embassy, with prostitutes. In exchange, Petrov had obtained information and powerful contacts.

“Petrov had other ties with other Israelis and his infiltration in their services is still covered up,” the Nationalist said.

The Israeli Embassy countered Monday that Siderov never fails in finding “facts” and “truths” that apply to his convictions, conspiracy theories, and claims about the Israeli participation in the world's greatest evils.

“It is truly regrettable that Bulgaria, a civilized country, has a political leader and Member of the Parliament such as Siderov. We however hope and believe Bulgarian people can make the difference between phobia and reality,” the declaration reads.
