Bulgaria's Doctors Union and the Bulgarian Health Minister Anna-Maria Borisova agree on 90% of the health issues in the country.

The head of the Bulgarian Union of Doctors, Tsvetan Raychinov, and Minister Borisova held their first work meeting Monday.

“We discussed most of the health issues in the country and I must admit that contrary to Prime Minister Borisov's impression, Minister Borisova is very communicative and easy to talk with,” said Raychinov after the meeting.

Upon appointing Borisova to the post of health minister, Bulgaria's Prime Minister acknowledged that his new appointee is a bit “difficult to communicate with.”

During the meeting the two parties have agreed that the budget of the National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK) must be updated so that all due payments be made on time.

“Minister Borisov promised to assist us in the matter but pointed out that she can do very little about the budget as she's not the one responsible for allocating means in the state,” commented Monday Raychinov.

Raychinov was quick to note that Borisova is “someone who wants to do things swiftly and efficiently.”

Minister Borisova is also said to have agreed to the deadlines set by the Union of Bulgarian Doctors that all due payments be made to the hospitals by NZOK by May 31

Bulgaria's Health Ministry and the Union agree on one other issue – the electronic health insurance cards that are to be introduced by the end of 2010.

There's also an undergoing analysis of the condition of the Bulgarian hospitals.

“There are no plans for the closing down of hospitals. Once the analysis is made, the medical establishments that do not meet the needed requirements will be advised to be turned into post treatment medical centers,” explained the head of the Bulgarian Doctors Union.

Borisova'a nomination as Bulgaria's health minister was approved by Parliament at the end of April, following the resignation of Bozhidar Nanev over accusations that he has concluded unfavorable for the state deals for the drug order of the swine flu pandemic.

During her first press conference, after her bid was announced by Prime Minister Borisov on April 7, Borisova was reluctant to answer any queries on how she intended to reform Bulgaria's health care. However, Borisova was quick to admit that she had donated BGN 20 000 for the composition of a fairy tale and a children’s song on the importance of milk for the bone system.

Later on Borisova managed to puzzled Bulgarian journalists at a Health Congress by answering succinctly to questions about her nomination with the single “I only smile.”

Her strange media appearances have caused doubts among both opposition MPs and allies to the GERB ruling party as to whether Borisova was fit to become Bulgaria's new health minister.
